A Digital Slam Dunk
The Client
Just Women’s Sports is 100% women’s sports, 100% of the time – from jaw dropping performances to off-court fits, they bring sports fans everything they need to see and know in the world of women’s sports. This unique position presents an incredible opportunity. JWS’s mission is to become the primary platform for up-to-date scores, stats, and stories for women’s sports, providing a personalized, dynamic web experience that truly delivers.
The Project
JWS asked High Seas to create a site design that was clean, modern, branded, and intuitive, with a mobile-responsive front-end, a speed optimized back-end, and ADA compliant. It needed to integrate live stats and scores, and be easy to create and publish content, with a solid platform foundation for JWS’ future growth. To create a new revenue stream, a robust Ad system was built into the backend.
The overall goal was to provide an engaging experience for women’s sports fans all over the world, with new features designed & built to provide a rich experience through video, podcasts, and deeper dives into stats, players, and teams.
The Approach
In order to develop a brand that was iconic and memorable, High Seas did a deep dive into exploration of a wide variety of concepts for consideration. We experimented with full logo solutions (symbol and custom wordmark) as well as a unique abbreviated logo for social media and merchandise. Building on the final logo, we developed an organized and expansive design system that could be leveraged to grow the site’s offerings over time. The brand became a solid foundation for their growing platform with a huge potential market.
The Result
Building on the WordPress content publishing platform, we developed a completely custom site that incorporated the extensive design system as well as complex stat and score integrations. Timing is critical for sports news so it was important to keep the publishing process efficient.
With a thorough tagging system, pages and topics are templatized so that related stats, scores, podcasts, and press can be automatically associated and articles can be published with a few clicks.
With so much data flowing, the visual design and information hierarchy is critical to a good user experience. The sports fan needs to know that they can quickly and reliably get the stats they’re looking for. Fonts, type treatments, color, and white space help lead the eye - the design should be as intuitive and invisible as possible.
