Modernizing the Digital Experience for America's Veterans

The Client

For more than a century, The American Legion has been committed to serving veterans, active-duty military personnel, their families, and local communities. As member expectations evolved, the organization launched a digital transformation initiative to modernize how it recruits, engages, and supports its nearly two million members

As part of that effort, High Seas partnered with The American Legion to design and build Legion+, a cross-platform mobile application that strengthens member engagement, simplifies recruitment, and connects veterans with the resources they need.

The Project

Many of the Legion's core services relied on disconnected systems and manual processes, making it difficult to recruit new members, manage volunteers, coordinate events, and provide members with easy access to important information. Recruiting often depended on paper forms, limiting members' ability to sign up new recruits in the field or at community events.

The organization also wanted to provide digital membership cards, improve access to benefits and resources, and create stronger connections between members and their local posts—all while modernizing its underlying technology infrastructure.

The Approach

As a long-term technology partner, High Seas collaborated closely with The American Legion through an agile, sprint-based development process, working in parallel with the Legion's IT team.

Using the .NET MAUI framework, High Seas built a single cross-platform application for iOS and Android that integrated seamlessly with Legion's existing Microsoft ecosystem - creating a flexible connection between the mobile experience and the Legion's evolving backend systems. With a simplified navigation structure and intuitive member experience, High Seas UX team balanced the needs of first-time users, longtime members, and post leadership. A beta release provided valuable feedback from members across the national organization, allowing the team to refine workflows, improve usability, and prioritize the features that delivered the greatest value before the public launch.

The initial release focused on streamlining recruitment and membership management, allowing members to recruit new veterans digitally from virtually anywhere without relying on paper applications. The app also introduced digital membership cards, dues management, member profiles, event information, volunteer opportunities, and organizational communications within a unified experience.

Beyond core membership features, Legion+ incorporated resources supporting the Legion's Be The One veteran suicide prevention initiative, making critical mental health information more accessible directly from the app.

The Result

Legion+ delivers a modern digital experience that makes it easier for veterans to connect and participate with their local posts, as well as recruit new members, and manage their memberships from a single application. By replacing fragmented, paper-based processes with an integrated mobile platform, The American Legion has improved operational efficiency while creating a more engaging member experience. Legion+ establishes a strong digital foundation that will continue supporting the organization's mission for generations to come.
